The name/heart combination is really great--super retro looking and an awesome combination of retro (rockabilly/burlesque) and sexy-- I mean, not that you need a whole lot of reason to want to see a welt under a skirt, but here's another one, right? The stockings themselves are beautifully made, and mimic exactly the feel and fit of the pairs of 1962 vintage French silks I have. they feel durable, and therefore less likely to run. 70th Anniversary for Nylon Stockings!

We're a few days late writing about this, but May 15th marks the 70th Anniversary for the introduction of Nylon stockings. Happy Anniversary! Nylon stockings were introduced for purchase in 1940, and nylon material was first seen by the world at the 1939 World's Fair along with the television set. Nylon material was first shown at the fair marketed as "strong as steel, fine as a spider's web" and was initially used for fishing line and tooth brush bristles. Luckily for us, it was later transformed into garter Nylon stockings and this hosiery was introduced for purchase in Gimbel's Department store on May 15th 1940. Clearly a huge success with women, millions of pairs were sold at $1.35 each, an incredible 64 million pairs of nylon stockings the first year! Before this invention, women wore pure silk stockings. 100% silk stockings are now fairly rare, but we do have them, to see and experience what pure silk hosiery is like, click here. We also have silk thigh highs which stay up on their own with a beautiful wide lace at the top.

While the original stockings were seamed (otherwise known as fully fashioned), later circular knit (non-seamed) stockings were introduced. We are happy to have authentic vintage reproductions of the original seamed stockings, 100% Nylon, knit meticulously on the exact same machines as the 1940's machines and a 100% nylon ultra sheer stocking, also made on the original machines. If you haven't experienced the transparency and beauty of stockings from this era its a true luxury.

As of late I have been focusing on cold weather leg wear and our new hosiery creations. I love these dearly of course, but the original focus of our company was vintage stockings.

Quite some years ago I purchased droves of original ultra sheer stockings. They were packaged in graphically stunning three pair boxes with sweet pastel colored tissue that lovingly encased the stockings. Trust me, if you haven't seen vintage hosiery from the 1940's and 50's, they were amazing. The stocking were meticulous, perfectly sheer, delicate, stunning and the packaging fabulous. I personally owned thousands of unique boxes in my stocking library. I was quite the collector of vintage hosiery, bordering on obsessive some might say. I finally stopped buying copious amounts of vintage stockings when it became obvious that my collection was overtaking my former super tiny 300 square foot NYC apartment. I had acquired so many boxes of stockings that I was beginning to store them in the oven as a last resort. This was not only a significant fire hazard, but any type of cooking was pretty much out of the question as well.

About eleven years ago I went around the world with my collection of vintage treasures and created perfect European reproductions of certain styles that I thought truly deserved to be revived. All of the original US factories no longer exist or are willing to make these labor intensive styles. Every year I change the colors but the idea and the quality remains the same.

Now in fashion magazines around the world you see the results of our efforts. Vintage stockings are everywhere, but we are making them with the same authentic methods, no manufacturing corners cut, we were one of the first to start the trend.

Today we received a new color stocking from Europe that is an authentic vintage style RHT stockings (reinforced heels and toes) with a blue welt with a sheer nude leg. Click here for details. It is not seamed but we do have a seamed version. It is just as sheer having no Lycra, needs a garter belt, a perfect reproduction. We also received another shipment of our previously sold out yellow/grey RHT stocking version.

Okay, so I posted about our Diana cotton/bamboo tights yesterday. But, and this is very last minute, we had such a great response to this product, we decided to make bright colors for fall as well, they will be in stock next week, but you can order them now. We had originally photographed our cotton/bamboo tights in red, but decided to keep it conservative and basic for this fall and did not introduce the bright colors we originally photographed. Now, due to demand for bright colors, we are going all out and making the original colors.

These cotton tights appear to be a medium weight cashmere/wool blend on the legs, .....the reality is that they are an Italian brushed cotton and bamboo blend, completely opaque, semi-fuzzy (is that a term?), ultra soft, ridiculously beautiful quality. They are eco-friendly cotton tights and they will last a very long time as you would expect from such a product (as long as you take care of them, no dryer on high heat).

You probably have not tried cotton tights with bamboo, but you should.

Glamour steps into spotlight for fall - Washington Times

I remember wearing dotted pantyhose years ago. Wore them to work, out in the evening, loved them. I think I had about a dozen pairs in every color of the rainbow. Actually I remember a pair that was a watermelon-ish color....maybe that wasn't such a good idea fashion wise.....but I digress. We're thrilled they made a roaring return to the world of fashion. This is just further evidence that everything does come back in style. Dotted tights are on the fashion runways again, as seen on the fall 2009 Balenciaga runway show and in London Fashion Week. They were using ultra sheer black pantyhose with small swiss dots and it looked terrific! Leggings aren't Dead. Marc Jacobs Spring 2010 Show is proof!

So all I've been reading about lately is Marc Jacobs wonderful runway show. I have to admit it was pretty amazing. I love that he is using sheer legwear creatively and especially in a Spring/Summer show where most designers don't traditionally use legwear. The New York Times slideshow sums it up perfectly. StockinGirl on the Runway in NYC Fashion Week Again!

What an exciting week for us at StockinGirl. Rihanna in Vogue wearing our stockings, and now it's Fashion Week in NYC! We are very excited to be involved with a few designer fashion shows this season (I think we've done at least one show in Fashion Week in NYC for at least six years), but it's typically a crazy time in the office, getting our factories to quickly custom dye tights, stockings, thigh highs, knee highs and fishnets to match the outfits, but it's all worth it, especially when we get to go and see the finished product and how terrific they look on the runway. On Saturday we are going to the United Bamboo show, and we are getting tickets to a couple of shows in the Bryant Park Tents to see our things as well. We will definitely post pictures when available. Also, we'll be sure to take plenty of pics of fashionistas with creatively worn legwear outside of the tents.

Also, a famous Paris burlesque review Gentry de Paris starring the incomparible Dita von Teese will be featuring our exquisite colored seamed stockings in their show! If you happen to be in Paris (lucky you), be sure to go, and let us know exactly how fabulous it is. We'lll be very jealous of you though.

Retro stockings and lingerie.... a great look returns! This month's W Magazine features lots of fabulous photos involving vintage 40's and 50's style garter belts, lingerie and sheer stockings. We think that the return to this look has something to do with AMC's critically acclaimed and stylishly savvy show Mad Men. While the program resonates dramatically and brims with authenticity, my heart does skip a beat when I see a pair of sheer stockings with a beautiful garter belt or girdle. Banana Republic recently did a whole men's collection based on the show, so we must not be the only ones who are influenced (influencing!?!) by this look. One of our other favorite shows is Hung, and we've noticed that a particular love "interest" of his is always wearing black stockings with a garter belt.

Our Gigi stockings are pictured in the nude/black color combination, no back seam, leg is nude, top is black, but we also have other color combinations such as pink leg, black 1940's seams and black retro style tops or yellow top, grey leg without seams. Click here for a blue top stocking with dramatic blue seam. We also have scarlet red stocking tops accenting black stockings. They are perfect reproductions of 1950's stockings, expertly crafted with a detailed welt (top). It's not easy to make stockings this perfectly transparent and beautiful. Today's modern manufacturing industry really doesn't want to spend the time making this type of stocking as it is a very slow, meticulous and expensive process. Knitting pure Nylon without Lycra is a very difficult and rare process to master but these stockings are knit to an extremely high level of quality. Finding a better stocking is unlikely. Incredibly ultra sheer fashion legwear with luxurious silky feel is the way hosiery was intended to be. We even make pure silk stockings identical to silk hosiery from the 1940's. Authentic hosiery is our passion.

We've heard from friendly sources abroad that we have multiple pages of editorial in the September Fall Fashion issue of Vogue Italy! I love their fall fashion issue, it's positively telephone book sized and is filled to the brim with the most beautiful images. The famous Steven Klein was the fashion photographer, Rihanna was the model, and his images are always amazing. So far we've only seen the cover with Rihanna, as the magazine hasn't made it's way across the Atlantic yet, but we will be sure to post the pics when we get them. We've heard rumors that she is wearing our fishnets, stockings, thigh highs and tights.

It's time to think about fall fashions and tights!

Summer is almost over... sadly... until very recently it was pretty cold and rainy in the Northeast where we reside so we don't feel like we had quite enough summer fun. On the bright side of the impending chillier weather we can start scheming about fun fashion statements for fall (and keeping our legs warm too!). At StockinGirl, we are bringing back our famous classic thick wool tights, cable knit tights and ribbed tights for the fifth year. Our wool tights are our most popular fall and winter item and have developed quite a following. You may have seen them displayed in a local boutique in your area. Ultra soft and luxurious, they are super warm and incredibly high quality (machine washing isn't a problem as long as you don't put them in the dryer). With the proper care they will look new year after year. New to StockinGirl in our wool tights this fall are navy blue and winter white. Danielle wool tights are plain knit with no texture, and are also available as cable knit tights and ribbed tights.

If you want lighter but still luxurious feeling opaque tights, we are excited about our new cotton/bamboo fiber tights. Bamboo fiber is eco-friendly while offering no compromise on texture or appearance. Our bamboo tights are wonderfully soft with a feel and look similar to a light cashmere fiber. Also, we've noticed that thigh highs are big again. We've seen images in Blackbook recently with pretty fabulous Prada-esque cotton over the knee socks. On trend, we have a crochet version of this style, made in Italy exclusively for us, which can be worn as over the knee socks (they have a knit top to hold them up), or pulled up as thigh highs. Our Violette thigh highs even look great layered over tights.

Stylelist posted about Japan's Miss Universe wearing these bright thigh highs with her kimono like dress. They call them thigh highs, but she is wearing a garter belt, so I'm not so sure. The tops do look like they might actually stay up on their own so they probably are right.
